Hobart: City Hotels and Accommodation
Many of Hobart's most popular accommodation options lie in the centre, which is around 17 km / 10.5 miles west of Hobart International Airport (HBA), connected by the Airporter shuttle bus and inexpensive taxis. With a steady stream of visitors all through the year, the city can become busy at times, particularly around festivals and other local celebrations.
Worth noting, popular events in the city include the Royal Hobart Regatta each February, the Australian Wooden Boat Festivals every other February, the Royal Hobart Show each October, and the Hobart Summer Festival held in December and January. All of these local events prove to be big crowd pullers and nearby accommodation is quick to become fully booked, making advance reservations a necessity.
The best places to stay in Hobart include the lively docks, Salamanca Place and nearby Battery Point, although accommodation in these areas can be pricey at times. The Custom House Hotel is situated close to the docks, on Murray Street, and offers stylish rooms and a good restaurant. Also worth considering, the wealthy neighbourhood of Sandy Bay contains many top hotels and some cheap motels.
Hobart's Central Business District (CBD) is vast and those looking for cheap lodging will find numerous hostels and friendly local pubs providing rooms. Many mid-range hotels also reside in this area, just a short walk away from Salamanca Place and the scenic waterfront area. Accommodation in central Hobart includes the Central City Backpackers Hostel along Collins Street, and the Theatre Royal Hotel on Campbell Street, standing alongside the acclaimed Theatre Royal.
Situated on the other side of Hobart, the North area and New Town district both offer reasonably priced accommodation, including a wealth of B&Bs and mid-range hotels, all of which are close to dining venues and bars. Hotels in northern Hobart include the Lodge on Elizabeth, which is situated along Elizabeth Street, close to the area's famed restaurant strip.
Further accommodation worth noting in Hobart includes the Somerset on the Pier complex, which can be found on Elizabeth St. Pier and provides a range of apartment rentals. Also, the Hotel Grand Chancellor on Davey Street, an imposing hotel which dominates much of the waterfront area, is known for its exceptional facilities and its superb harbour views.
